Requirement to get new OCI Visa

While new rules have come into effect as of January 29, 2015 dispensing with the requirement to carry the old passport where U visa was pasted along with new passport when entering or exiting from India. Some OCI holders may be wondering whether the requirement to get fresh OCI documents/ OCI U Visa is still applicable to them.

Clarification of new OCI rules

Since there is no need to carry old passport showing original OCI U visa. OCI holders will now only need to show their OCI registration booklet as proof of their OCI status. OCI holders between the ages of 21 to 49 are the real beneficiaries under this new OCI announcement dispensing with the requirement to carry old passport. Prior to January 29, 2015 OCI holders when their passports with U Visa sticker expired, to either get their OCI U visa transferred to their new passport or carry the old passport. Now OCI holders above age 21 as well as OCI holders who have been issued OCI documents after they reached aged 50, need not worry about transferring OCI Visa to their new passports. OCI holders who are below 21 years of age, will still have to get fresh OCI documents issued every time their foreign passport expires and a new one is issued. OCI holders on reaching age 50 will also have to get fresh OCI documents once and then there is no need for reissue of their OCI documents.

Re-issue of OCI Card (On getting a New Passport)

The requirement to get new OCI documents still exists for some categories of OCI card holders each time they are issued a new passport.  For all applicants who are 20 years of age or younger, For an applicant who is 50 years of age or older, OCI documents must be re-issued once after the issuance of a new passport. If the OCI card is issued for the first time after the age of 50 years, then there is no need for re-issuance of OCI. OCI holders between the ages of 21 to 49 years are also exempt from the requirement of getting fresh OCI documents until they reach age 50 and require a new passport.
